Essential Job Functions of Law Enforcement Bomb Technicians
Essential Job Functions Related to Respiratory Protection:
- Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
- Wear a full-face air-purifying respirator
- Wear a Level B Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) suit
- Wear a protective suit (lighter than the bomb suit) and a Level B OSHA suit (including SCBA) in an immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) environment
- Work outside in heat, humid, and cold environments while wearing a protective suit (lighter than the bomb suit) and a Level B OSHA suit (including SCBA) for 30 minutes (or other period of time defined by the agency)
Essential Job Functions Related to Other Personal Protective Equipment:
- Wear a bomb suit (weighing about 80 pounds)
- Kneel, bend, and twist while wearing a bomb suit
- While wearing bomb suit, walk 300 feet carrying a portable x-ray (25 pounds) or a disrupter (40 pounds) to a potential explosive device, set up the x-ray or disrupter, walk back to a safe distance, activate the portable x-ray or disrupter and return to the potential explosive device and recover the equipment
- Work outside in heat, humid, and cold environments while wearing a bomb suit for 30 minutes (or other period of time defined by the agency)
Manipulation Tasks:
- Perform/render safe procedures (RSP) – i.e., disassemble and/or deactivate a potential explosive device – using hand-held tools while wearing a bomb suit
- Remotely guide a robot to take pictures (including an x-ray) and disrupt a potential explosive device
Other Essential Job Functions:
- Be able to distinguish small details on a screen in color and in black and white
- Investigate bomb threats
- Investigate bombing scenes
